I'm convinced that there are a lot of Redditors who like noob questions, and I'm one of them. The "don't post here unless you've read the wiki" thing is overblown. In this case I might assign some haulers to a burrow down there in order to clean all the bars out of the smelter, or move ore into the quantum stockpile, etc. The only other case where I might use a burrow is if I have widely separated work areas, like if I have a forge 150 levels down. I don't use burrows for military, because "s-m" seems to work well enough. I designate the "#" to be engraved, then assign the vampire candidate to the burrow, and he runs right in there and I lock the door behind him. There is a burrow that comprises the "S" and the "#" to the right of the "S", which is called "Vampire". I also make a contraption like this: # = rock/wall An obvious example is an engraver who must accommodate an unexpected noble. I may also use a priority burrow that I can assign dwarfs to if they must labor in one specific place now. If you have a mining and a defense burrow, DF tends to get confused about where dwarfs can go, and you end up digging out things that you don't want to dig out yet.Ī mining burrow is a very powerful thing and I would never not use one. It is simple to turn this into a good civil defense burrow, and I can add or remove from it as civilians are allowed into areas that have had recent military activity, so they don't go blundering into an area where there is still fighting.Ī combined mining/defense burrow is good, because when civilians are confined to the burrow via an alert, the miners can still work. This burrow includes the wagon, or he can't get his tools, and I need to be careful that food and drink are included in the burrow, either by leaving them on the wagon or by moving them to a place that the miners have dug out.Īs the fort is dug out, I end up with a burrow that almost exactly comprises the tiles that have been dug out. I lay my fort out at embark time, and make one burrow for each miner, so at the beginning of the game, each miner has an exact set of tiles he can mine out.Īt some point, this level of micro is longer necessary, so I put them all in one burrow.
